O BSERVE & OVERVIEW
- What is happening in the picture? Who is in the foreground? Is it indoor or outdoors? What do you see.
- Summarize the action without analyzing its meaning yet. Think of it like "paraphrasing" in a written text.
- Break the picture down into sections.
- Describe the placement of objects on the picture. Name EVERYTHING you see, look at all the details.
- Describe color, lighting, placement, attitude, sizes, orientations, and movement in the image.
- What is the title of the work and the artist?
- What does the title tell you about the picture? How much does it add to what you understand--or do not understand--about the picture?
- Analyse the relationships in the picture. How do objects, people, or colors relate to each other in the picture?
- What clues to the message or argument are theses relationships giving you?
- What seems to be the most important relationship in the picture?
- Draw a conclusion to the meaning or message of the picture based on the first four analyses.
- What is the argument the artist is trying to convey?
